Expectations of Sprinklers in Schools

Steve Mills, of West Mids F&RS and a BAFSA council member today attended a Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar.

He writes: I managed to pose the following question to the panel at the end of the first session.

'If sustainability is an essential element in the BSF programme, is a school that is destroyed by fire a sustainable asset and if not,why are we allowing schools to be built, especially Academies, without them having sprinklers fitted?'

To my surprise the following answer came back from Tim Byles, Chief Executive of Partnership for Schools (PfS, who have been tasked to oversee the BSF programme).

' It is our expectation that schools will be fitted with sprinklers (he mentioned Jim Knight's role and aspirations) and if you hear of schools not being so fitted will you please let me know'.

Accordingly, please let us (info@bafsa.org.uk) know of any NEW schools which are being constructed without sprinkler protection and BAFSA will pass this information on to Tim Byles.
