100th Candidate for ABBE L2 Fire Sprinkler Qualification

Shane Tyler, a seasoned fire sprinkler installer with over 23 years of hands-on experience, officially became the 100th candidate to enrol on the ABBE Level 2 Certificate in Fire Sprinkler Installation through BAFSA (British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association).
Currently working with Waring Developments as a subcontractor to Hall & Kay, Shane made the decision to pursue the qualification in order to obtain the blue skilled worker card - a key industry-recognised credential.
“Although I have a SSSTS qualification, the blue installer card is the recognised card within the industry to evidence I am competent to carry out my sprinkler installation role,” Shane explained. “The industry has changed significantly over the last few years and this card is essential for me to continue my work as an installer.”
Shane initially worked in HVAC pipe installation until he was laid off and began his career in sprinklers when a friend got him a job at his father's sprinkler company. While there he learned everything from prepping pipe and installing mains to building pump houses. Nine years later he moved over to Waring Developments where he's now a supervisor running major projects in both the UK and Germany.”
Despite his long-standing experience and progression, Shane still actively works on-site alongside his team. “A typical day involves signing in, attending site meetings, checking on my team and kit, then getting stuck into the install work myself. I’m a working supervisor and I still love being hands-on.”
Reflecting on the industry, Shane hopes to see greater recognition for fire sprinkler professionals.
“If I could change one thing, it would be for our trade to finally be recognised properly. We’re often seen as the new guys on-site, but people don’t realise how critical our work is - not just for buildings, but for saving lives.”
As the 100th candidate on the program, Shane is proud of the milestone and encourages others in the industry to follow suit.
“I’m delighted to be part of this. Once I complete the modules and submit my video evidence, I’m looking forward to receiving my qualification. I’d definitely recommend others to enrol - it’s solid, independent proof of your competence.”
Ian Charlton, Hall & Kay's Operations Director North says: "The sprinkler installer ABBE Level 2 Certificates are invaluable for both individuals and sprinkler organisations. They provide engineers with opportunities to enhance their skills, broaden their sprinkler knowledge, and advance their careers. For organisations, investing in such programs demonstrates a commitment to employee growth and helps build a more skilled, motivated workforce. Reaching the milestone of 100 candidates with Shane Tyler enrolling is a testament to the program's success and its positive impact on the sprinkler industry."
Alan Hughes, Fire Sprinkler Lecturer, GRWP Llandrillo – Menai (Llandrillo College) says "GRWP Llandrillo - Menai, are proud to be working with BAFSA on the development and delivery of the ABBE Level 2 Certificate in Fire Sprinkler Installation for the experienced worker candidates. BAFSA are leading the way forward for getting time-served workers a qualification to allow them to apply for their blue skilled worker card and continue working in the industry."
