Sprinklers bring Scottish warehouse fire under control

A warehouse fire at a recycling facility in Scotland was swiftly brought under control thanks to an Automatic Water Suppression System (AWSS), highlighting the growing importance of fire prevention technology in high-risk industrial sites.

The incident occurred on 7 April 2026 at 08:15 when two pumping appliances from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were mobilised to reports of a fire within a large recycling warehouse measuring approximately 200m by 100m.

On arrival, firefighters discovered the blaze involved dry recycling material inside the building. However, the premises’ sprinkler system had already activated, successfully containing and controlling the fire before crews reached the scene.

Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire using one jet, and a stop message was issued just 20 minutes later at 08:35. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

SFRS said the incident demonstrates how Automatic Water Suppression Systems can play a vital role in preventing major fires from escalating, protecting businesses from severe financial losses and reducing disruption to local communities.

Large fires at waste and recycling facilities have become increasingly common across the UK, with the National Fire Chiefs Council reporting around 300 significant waste-site fires every year. Such incidents often require extensive firefighting resources and can lead to environmental damage, public health concerns, road closures and major economic disruption.

Fire safety experts argue that active fire protection systems such as sprinklers should form part of a wider, sustainable fire safety strategy. Industry guidance published by the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum (WISH) recommends that waste operators seek competent advice when selecting suppression systems appropriate to the scale and risks of their operations.

Recommended measures may include sprinklers, deluge systems, water spray systems and foam suppression equipment, all installed and maintained under UKAS-accredited certification schemes and in consultation with insurers.
