On 10th November four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a communal kitchen on the seventh floor of a student accommodation block in Stratford – around 200 students were evacuated. The sprinkler system activated and suppressed the fire and a London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “For a long time we have been calling for residential tower blocks to retrofitted with sprinklers. Sprinklers are the only fire safety system that detects a fire, suppresses a fire and raises the alarm.
“Sprinklers save lives and protect property and they are especially important where there are vulnerable residents who would find it difficult to escape, like those with mobility problems.”

A fire in a service area on the 2nd floor of the West Shopping Centre in Stratford resulted in the evacuation of thousands people on November 11th.
Three fire engines and 14 firefighters and officers responded to the call but the fire was contained and suppressed by the a sprinkler system, preventing thousands of pounds worth of damage to stock and the building and the businesses inside.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Sprinklers are proven to save lives and property and also allow businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible.”

Sprinkler save : factory, Birtley
A manufacturing plant in Birtley was saved from serious damage thanks to a sprinkler system which activated after a fire broke out mid-morning on 22nd March 2017.
Two Tyne and Wear FRS crews from Birtley and Washington were called to the 24,000m² manufacturing and fabrication factory after the alarm was raised shortly after 1000. The fire was caused by a motor overheating in a shot blasting booth.
The sprinkler system suppressed the fire and confined it to the 20m x 20m shot blasting area. Machinery and all cabling and plastics in the booth were 100% severely damaged by fire.
The fire was extinguished by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, using two hose reels. Assistant Chief Officer John Baines, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “I would encourage all businesses to install sprinklers to protect their premises and staff, the general public and firefighters.”
A spokesperson for the business said: “The sprinklers have saved us a fortune.”
